Suizen and Absence

This series of solo recordings grows out of a deconstruction of the Japanese practice of Suizen, often translated as “Zen through breath.” Historically, Suizen was a form of meditation practiced by monks using a bamboo flute. In this project, the practice is translated into the language of the saxophone.

The ritual surface is stripped away, leaving only the raw physics of sound: breath, vibration, air moving through metal. This is not a performance. It is an honest conversation with oneself, with no audience required.

The room was empty — only the musician, the instruments, and microphones capturing every overtone, every subtle movement of air.

Three improvisations unfold like three stages of immersion:

I. Ichion (soprano and alto saxophones)
II. Kyōmei (soprano saxophone)
III. Hamon (alto saxophone)

GREGORY KHARANEKA & TORD HAGBARTH BREMNES — LIVE PERFORMANCE
Gregory Kharaneka (saxophones) and Tord Hagbarth Bremnes (electronics) create a living soundscape in experimental improvised music, where human and technology merge, contrast, and complement each other. Each saxophone sound is immediately processed electronically, returned in transformed form, and drives the improvisation in new directions. This is not a conventional duet but a self-listening system that responds and reshapes itself in real time. More info: https://nmh.no/konserter/ra
